Our full-time department faculty members are all doctorally qualified in their disciplines. Despite the large number of environmental science majors at Westfield State University, our class sizes remain small, enabling one-on-one connection with expert faculty. Instructors will provide you with real-world experience through outdoor labs and fieldwork near our campus on the edge of the Berkshire Mountains.

Westfield State University has one of the largest Environmental Science departments in the Northeast — our program has been ranked #1 in Massachusetts and #26 in the country. The department emphasizes environmental science fieldwork and hands-on learning, including canoe trips on the Westfield River and nearby lakes, field trips to management and restoration sites, and the opportunity to experience a short-term study abroad course in Costa Rica or Ecuador. 

Our environmental science graduates go on to work in exciting positions in a range of important job sectors, including:
